“Obtaining bioactives for use in preventing obesity and metabolic syndrome using the fractionation of natural extracts”.

  • Leader: Nutrition Research Centre (CIN-UNAV)
  • Associated member: CNTA

General objective: Identify, characterise and study different natural sources of bioactive components that could be used as functional foods with the potential to be applied in the treatment or prevention of obesity and/or Metabolic Syndrome (MS), one of the consequences of obesity.

Over the past 3 years, the Nutrition Research Centre (CIN-UNAV) has studied the effects of supplementing the diet with diverse natural extracts and bioactive compounds on variables related to obesity and MS.

This project has a multiple approach:

  • On the one hand, plant extracts have been fractioned to establish which fractions are active regarding the accumulation of fat in a simple in vivo model, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.
  • On the other hand, based on positive results obtained with diverse pure compounds both in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (C. Elegans), research has been performed to find natural sources that contain them and studies are being carried out to see if the effect can be preserved.

Furthermore, in collaboration with CNTA, a plant extract has been obtained and is giving good results, which is why it is being fractioned on a semi-industrial scale to provide the amount needed to try out the fractions on an obese rat model.

“This project has been funded by the Government of Navarre via the calling for Grants for Technology Centres and Research Bodies and the diffusion of knowledge to undertake R&D projects 2017”
